This year has already been packed with scrappy applique classes! My background being in education, I LOVE to teach! It is such a joy to merge two of my great loves: teaching and quilting!
When teaching, my goal is that all of my students will get a firm grasp of my scrappy applique techniques as well as understand and start to explore the many creative options available within this technique. I’ve designed my patterns and classes to facilitate this. I do not want every student to walk away with identical quilt tops; I want each individual to be empowered to create something completely unique and representative of her/himself.
I started off the year in Kansas City with the KC Modern Quilt Guild. I had a blast, and who knew Kansas City was such a cool place?! Here are some shots from our classes.
Day one: Menagerie Workshop
Each student chose one of my animal templates (available here) for this fun class.
So much fun! As you can see, some of the animals aren’t yet cut out, but you get the idea. (See below for tips on preparing for your workshop to ensure you get as much done as possible.)
Day two: Around the World Quilt workshop (pattern available in my book)
Needless to say, we had a blast!
If you are taking my workshop, there are a couple of things you can prepare ahead of time that will allow you to get as much done as possible during class:
- Apply your fusible web to the backs of your collage fabric. Cut 4″ strips of 8-10 (or more, if desired) different fabrics and use the fusible web manufacturer’s instructions to apply the web to your fabric. This is the most time consuming step, and will free up A LOT of time if it’s done before class.
- If you have your template, trace it onto your lightweight, non-woven, non-fusible interfacing. Use a writing utensil that is dark enough to show through fabric, but will not disappear, bleed, or smear. The animal templates don’t take too much time to trace, but doing this ahead of time is especially helpful for the Around the World Quilt class.
The Around the World Quilt template is found in my book, Scrappy Bits Applique. You can order it here or buy one from me in person (I always have copies or my books and patterns at my workshops and guild programs, and I can take cash or card).
The Menagerie (animal) templates are available here or you can purchase a professionally printed copy from me in person. If the class is at a fabric/quilt shop, the shop will likely have the book/patterns available for purchase.
As with anything, I am always happy to answer any questions you have!
